Darwin Núñez completed a season-long loan move from Al-Hilal to Al-Diriyah in August 2026. The confirmed transfer replaces earlier reports suggesting that the Uruguay striker was merely approaching an exit.
The agreement keeps Núñez under contract with Al-Hilal while allowing him to represent newly promoted Al-Diriyah until the end of the 2026–27 season. It became one of the Saudi Pro League’s most notable confirmed moves of the 2026 summer transfer market.
Núñez joins Al-Diriyah on loan
On 21 August 2026, Al-Hilal officially approved Núñez’s loan to Al-Diriyah until the end of the 2026–27 season. The Saudi Pro League subsequently confirmed that Al-Diriyah had announced the striker alongside Enzo Millot and Adil Boulbina.
This is a temporary transfer rather than a permanent departure. Núñez remains contracted to Al-Hilal, and neither club’s announcement disclosed a purchase option, loan fee or salary arrangement. Those details should therefore not be presented as confirmed facts.
For Al-Diriyah, the move adds a senior international forward ahead of the club’s first season following promotion to the Saudi Pro League. For Núñez, it provides a new role without resolving his longer-term future beyond the loan period.
How Núñez’s Al-Hilal spell changed
Núñez joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool in August 2025 on a three-year contract. Both clubs confirmed the permanent transfer, although the official announcements did not disclose the fee.
The composition of Al-Hilal’s attack changed again in February 2026 when the club signed Karim Benzema. Núñez was subsequently absent from Al-Hilal’s domestic squad, creating uncertainty around his position before the summer window.
The sequence should not be simplified into an officially confirmed claim that Benzema personally forced Núñez out. Al-Hilal did not state that as the reason for the loan. The club later terminated Benzema’s contract by mutual agreement on 31 August, only ten days after approving Núñez’s move to Al-Diriyah.
These developments show why transfer coverage must separate the order of events from assumptions about the decisions behind them.
Why the difference between a loan and a sale matters
A permanent transfer moves a player’s registration to the buying club under a new contract. A loan allows the receiving club to register the player temporarily while the original employment contract generally remains with the parent club.
In Núñez’s case, Al-Hilal’s announcement specifies that the loan runs until the end of the 2026–27 season. It does not confirm what will happen after that date.
Reports about wages, purchase clauses or future negotiations may provide additional context, but they should remain clearly labelled as reports unless one of the clubs publishes the contractual details.
Real Madrid complete the Dumfries transfer
Another confirmed move from the 2026 summer transfer market was Denzel Dumfries joining Real Madrid from Inter Milan.
Real Madrid announced the agreement on 5 July 2026. The Netherlands international signed a four-year contract running until 30 June 2030.
Unlike the earlier version of this article, there is no need to connect the Dumfries signing to unsupported descriptions of Real Madrid’s wider spending strategy. The confirmed information is straightforward: the clubs reached an agreement, and the player joined Madrid under a contract lasting until 2030.
Confirmed transfers and transfer rumours
Transfer stories generally pass through several stages: initial interest, negotiations, an agreement between clubs, medical checks and the final announcement. Not every report reaches the last stage.
The distinction is particularly important when covering stories such as the rumours linking Erling Haaland with Real Madrid. A report about interest or discussions should not be written as though a transfer has been completed.
Núñez’s situation illustrates how quickly the status can change. He moved from being linked with several possible destinations to completing a confirmed domestic loan. Once Al-Hilal and the Saudi Pro League published their announcements, the earlier “set to leave” framing became obsolete.
What the loan means for the 2026–27 season
Núñez can now play for Al-Diriyah during the club’s first Saudi Pro League season following promotion. Al-Hilal retains his contract while the loan remains in effect.
The move gives both clubs a defined arrangement for the current season, but it does not establish Núñez’s destination after the loan ends. Unless Al-Hilal, Al-Diriyah or the player announces another agreement, his position beyond 2026–27 remains unresolved.
